Janet (Stong) Shaffer, 90, a resident of Graystone Manor Altoona, formerly of Juniata Gap, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 26, 2023. She was born on December 27, 1932, to Harold and Marie (Stuempfle) Stong.
Janet was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband, Albert Shaffer, whom she married on May 2, 1953; her two sons, William (Diana) Shaffer of Altoona, PA, and David (Gwen Vredevoogd) Shaffer of Marshall, VA; her adoring grandchildren, Kristen (Kristopher) Fedeli of Mars, PA, Stephen (Jenna) Shaffer of Canonsburg, PA, Camila Escobar of Silver Spring, MD, and Madeline Lambelet of Livingston Manor, NY. She was also loved by her five great-grandchildren: Drew, Lucas, Maya, Gianna, Nova, and her beloved dog, Casey.
Janet is preceded in death by her parents, her in-laws, and her lifelong best friend and sister at heart, Dorothy Sands.
Janet was a 1950 graduate of Altoona Area High School. She gained a B.S. in Elementary Education from the Pennsylvania State University, where she graduated with Honors. She then went on to obtain her Master’s Degree in Literacy from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She combined her passions for reading and teaching by spending her career at the Hollidaysburg Area School District. She loved her days teaching in the classroom and ultimately retired in 1997 as the district Reading Supervisor. Janet touched the lives of the children she worked with as well as her colleagues during her time in the district.
Janet was happiest with a book in her hand, her dog at her feet, and her family around her. She loved classical music, traveling, and spending time with those she loved dearest. She had a special gift for communication and never failed to make others laugh and feel loved. She will be dearly missed by all.
At Janet’s request, there will be no viewing. Friends and family will be received on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 10 AM at First Evangelical Lutheran Church (1401 12th Ave, Altoona, PA 16601), where Janet was a member. There will be a memorial service to follow at 11 AM. She will be laid to rest at a later time at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Central PA Humane Society at 1837 E Pleasant Valley Blvd, Altoona, PA 16602.
